Telling My Story

It was probably my longest flight from London to Dallas, and I mean that because we were sitting on the tarmac for over 2 hours. To make matters worse, I was sitting in the exit row and had almost finished my book. I’ve never been able to sleep on a flight unless I get a really big hit of melatonin, helping me to sleep sitting down. I’m jealous of all those people who are able to simply close their eyes and sleep automatically.

I was coming back home to Monterrey, México, having completed my first major marathon: Berlin. My eighth marathon, half of them outside of my hometown, three of them out of the country.

With obvious time to kill, I started talking with the woman next to me. She told me that she loves Mexico and had recently spent a month in Puerto Vallarta. After I mentioned that I had just run the Berlin marathon, we began sharing stories, as she was a runner too.

Greenland, 2017 – A Marathon and a Half

I have run in different countries, and I usually prefer unusual, weird, or different places, not simply the “popular” marathons, so, I told her a bit about my travels and how each has given me new, different, weird, and enriching experiences. She thanked me for motivating her to get into running again, as she had lapsed for a bit, and suggested I could start a blog or a podcast, talking about these experiences and how they have shaped me.

Though I didn’t ask her name after over 12 hours trapped on the same flight, this lady is not the first person to say I should write a book/blog/podcast about my running experiences (Hi, Kira! You were the first!), I will also thank her for motivating me to write a few of my adventures. I think it’s time to begin.

I hope you enjoy the ramblings of a traveler who uses marathons and half marathons as an excuse, being as slow as a turtle walking over molasses.
